Portioning
Sample Portion Calculations for 100% meal replacement
The portioning of food for dogs can be quite challenging, while I’ve done a little research in various fora, it will depend on their weight, age, activity level, and breed/metabolism (the last two being a bit difficult to apply a standard to). With our home-cooked diet, here’s what I found to be successful for Chase, as a 27lb, fairly active (3 walks a day, one of which usually an hour or more, and visits to parks and recreation areas for free play 30-60 mins multiple times per month) and well apportioned (not skinny and not overweight, BCS = 4 or 5) mixed breed dog.
27lbs dog = ~ 1 ¾ cups per day x 14 days = 24.5 cups = ~ 11 ½ lbs = per 2 weeks
My research has found these following “norms” applied for portioning dog food, yet in addition to the above dog-specific considerations, be advised of food-specific considerations such as caloric amounts, water levels, etc that can inform portioning accordingly. And of course, consult your veterinarian for optimal customization to your dog(s) health and well-being.

Transitioning
Some ideas to help with your pup’s transition to a new fresh food diet:

- Make it more appealing:
- Warm it slightly: This can enhance the aroma and make it more enticing.
- Hand-feed small amounts: Sometimes, offering a bite or two from your hand can pique their interest.
- Be patient and persistent: It can take some dogs time to adjust to new foods. Continue offering the fresh food at their regular meal times.
- Don’t give in to pickiness immediately: If they refuse the fresh food, take it away after a reasonable amount of time (15-20 minutes) and offer it again at the next scheduled feeding. Avoid offering treats or other foods in between, as this can reinforce picky behavior.
- Ensure the food is fresh and palatable: Make sure the fresh food is stored properly and hasn’t spoiled.
- Slow the transition: If you switched abruptly and experienced some challenges, go back to a gradual approach. Start by mixing a very small amount of the fresh food (10-25%) with their old kibble. Gradually increase the amount of fresh food and decrease the kibble over 7-10 days (or even longer for sensitive dogs).
- Consult your veterinarian: If your dog refuses to eat for more than 24-48 hours, or if they show other signs of illness (lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea), it’s important to consult your veterinarian to rule out any underlying health issues.
In conclusion, while some initial hesitation is normal, complete refusal of fresh food after only 2-3 feedings isn’t the most common scenario, especially if the food is palatable and the dog is generally healthy. It often indicates a need for a slower, more gradual transition or strategies to make the new food more appealing.
